CKA — What is CKA?
What is the CKA Certification?
The Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) is a professional certification offered by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) in collaboration with The Linux Foundation. It validates that you have the skills, knowledge, and competency to perform the responsibilities of a Kubernetes administrator.
Unlike traditional IT certifications that rely on multiple-choice questions, the CKA is a performance-based exam. You work on live Kubernetes clusters, solving real-world tasks in a terminal environment. This makes it one of the most respected and practical certifications in the cloud-native ecosystem.
Performance-Based Exam Format
The CKA exam gives you:
- A Linux terminal connected to real Kubernetes clusters
- 15–20 tasks to complete in 2 hours
- Full access to the official Kubernetes documentation
- No theory questions — every task requires hands-on execution
You will create resources, troubleshoot failures, configure RBAC, back up etcd, upgrade clusters, and debug networking issues — all from the command line.
This is not a memorization test. It tests whether you can actually administer Kubernetes clusters under time pressure.
Who Should Take CKA?
| Role | Why CKA? |
|---|---|
| DevOps Engineer | Build and manage Kubernetes infrastructure pipelines |
| SRE / Platform Engineer | Ensure cluster reliability, scaling, and observability |
| System Administrator | Transition from traditional infrastructure to container orchestration |
| Cloud Engineer | Manage Kubernetes on AWS EKS, Azure AKS, GCP GKE |
| Infrastructure Engineer | Design and maintain production-grade cluster architectures |
| Security Engineer | Foundation for CKS (CKA is a prerequisite) |
Career Benefits
Getting CKA certified provides tangible career advantages:
- Industry gold standard — CKA is the most recognized Kubernetes certification for infrastructure professionals
- Hands-on validation — Proves you can actually build and manage clusters, not just memorize theory
- Career growth — Opens doors to DevOps, SRE, Platform Engineering, and Cloud Architecture roles
- Foundation for CKS — CKA is a prerequisite for the Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist exam
- Salary boost — CKA-certified professionals command higher salaries in the cloud-native job market
- Vendor neutral — Recognized across AWS, Azure, GCP, and on-premises environments
Kubernetes Certification Landscape
The CNCF offers three Kubernetes certifications:
| Certification | Focus | Prerequisite | Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) | Cluster operations & administration | None | Intermediate |
| CKAD (Certified Kubernetes Application Developer) | Application design & deployment | None | Intermediate |
| CKS (Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist) | Cluster & application security | CKA required | Advanced |
CKA is the recommended starting point for anyone in an operations, infrastructure, or SRE role. If you are a developer, consider starting with CKAD instead.
What CKA Covers
The CKA exam tests five domains:
- Cluster Architecture, Installation & Configuration (25%) — kubeadm, etcd, RBAC, upgrades
- Workloads & Scheduling (15%) — Deployments, ConfigMaps, Secrets, scaling, scheduling
- Services & Networking (20%) — Services, Ingress, DNS, CNI, NetworkPolicies
- Storage (10%) — PV, PVC, StorageClasses, volume expansion
- Troubleshooting (30%) — Cluster failures, node issues, application debugging
Warning: Troubleshooting carries 30% — the single largest domain. Dedicate significant study time here. It can make or break your exam.
