CKA — Prerequisites & Study Plan

2 minute read

Self-Assessment Checklist

Before starting CKA preparation, check your baseline knowledge. You should be comfortable with:

Skill Required Level Status
Linux command line Comfortable with bash, file system, permissions ☐
Container basics Can build and run Docker containers ☐
Kubernetes concepts Understand Pods, Deployments, Services ☐
YAML syntax Can read and write YAML files ☐
Networking basics Understand IP, DNS, ports, TCP/UDP ☐
vi/vim editor Basic editing, save, quit ☐

If you checked all boxes, you are ready for CKA preparation. If you are missing fundamentals, complete the Kubernetes Foundation Tutorial first.

Practice Environment Options

You need a real Kubernetes cluster to practice. Here are the best options:

Environment Cost Best For Setup Time
Minikube Free Single-node local practice 5 minutes
kind (Kubernetes in Docker) Free Multi-node local practice 2 minutes
kubeadm on VMs Free (with VMs) Realistic exam environment 30 minutes
Vagrant + kubeadm Free Reproducible multi-node cluster 15 minutes
KillerCoda Free Browser-based practice Instant
killer.sh Included with exam CKA exam simulator Instant
Cloud (EKS/AKS/GKE) Paid Production-like experience 15 minutes

Recommendation: Use kind or Minikube for daily practice. Use kubeadm on VMs at least once to experience the real cluster setup process. Save killer.sh for your final mock exam.

For candidates with basic Kubernetes knowledge who can dedicate 1–2 hours daily:

Week Focus Chapters Practice
Week 1 Architecture & Installation Cluster Architecture, Kubeadm Setup Build a cluster from scratch with kubeadm
Week 2 Maintenance & Backup Cluster Upgrades, etcd Backup & Restore Perform a full cluster upgrade and etcd backup/restore cycle
Week 3 Security & Workloads RBAC & Security, Workloads & Scaling Create RBAC policies, deploy and scale apps
Week 4 Scheduling & Networking Scheduling, Services & Networking Practice taints/tolerations, create Services
Week 5 Ingress, Storage & Troubleshooting Ingress & DNS, Storage, Troubleshooting Set up Ingress, PV/PVC, break and fix clusters
Week 6 Review & Mock Exams Exam Tips & Mock Exam Timed practice, killer.sh sessions

4-Week Accelerated Plan

For candidates with existing Kubernetes hands-on experience:

Week Focus Hours/Day
Week 1 Architecture, kubeadm, Upgrades, etcd 2–3 hours
Week 2 RBAC, Workloads, Scheduling 2–3 hours
Week 3 Services, Ingress, Storage, Troubleshooting 2–3 hours
Week 4 Mock exams, weak area review, killer.sh 3–4 hours

2-Week Crash Course

For experienced Kubernetes practitioners who just need exam prep:

Week Focus Hours/Day
Week 1 Skim all chapters, focus on kubeadm, etcd, RBAC, troubleshooting 3–4 hours
Week 2 Mock exams, killer.sh, time management practice 3–4 hours

Key Study Tips

  1. Practice on real clusters daily — Reading alone will not prepare you. The exam is 100% hands-on.
  2. Prioritize troubleshooting — It carries 30% of the total score. Break things on purpose and fix them.
  3. Master kubeadm operations — Cluster setup and upgrades are unique to CKA and heavily tested.
  4. Memorize etcd backup/restore — The exact etcdctl flags with certificates are tested every exam.
  5. Time your practice — Simulate exam conditions with a 2-hour timer and no external resources.
  6. Use imperative commands — Every second saved typing adds up over 15–20 questions.
