KCSA — Exam Day Preparation

9 minute read

Exam Day Preparation

The KCSA is an online, proctored, multiple-choice exam delivered through PSI Secure Browser. Your exam experience depends not only on what you know but also on your environment, equipment, and mental readiness.

Do not underestimate logistics. Every year, candidates lose time or get disqualified because of environment issues that could have been prevented with 10 minutes of preparation the day before.

Pre-Exam Timeline

3 Days Before the Exam

Task Details
Test PSI Secure Browser Download and run the PSI system check from your exam portal. Verify webcam, microphone, screen resolution, and internet speed.
Check your ID Ensure you have a valid, government-issued photo ID that matches your registration name exactly (including middle name if you registered with one).
Verify exam time and timezone Confirm the exam date and time. Convert to your local timezone. Set two reminders.
Review weak domains Use the domain weight analysis and mock exam results to identify your 2-3 weakest areas. Focus remaining study time here.
Prepare the room Identify the room you will use. Ensure it has a door that closes, adequate lighting, and a clean desk.

1 Day Before the Exam

Task Details
Clear the desk Remove all papers, books, sticky notes, and extra monitors. Only your computer, keyboard, mouse, and webcam should be on the desk.
Test internet connection Run a speed test. You need a stable connection — wired Ethernet is preferred over WiFi. Minimum: 5 Mbps down, 3 Mbps up.
Close unnecessary software Ensure no VPN, screen sharing, remote desktop, or virtual machine software is running. PSI may flag these.
Charge your laptop If using a laptop, charge to 100% AND keep it plugged in during the exam.
Inform household members Let people in your home know not to enter the room during the exam window. Interruptions can result in exam termination.
Stop studying by evening Give your brain rest. No new material the night before. Review key tables or flashcards if you must, but prioritize sleep.

Exam Day Morning

Task Details
Wake up early Give yourself at least 2 hours before the exam to prepare.
Eat a proper meal Your brain needs fuel. Eat a balanced meal — avoid heavy food that causes drowsiness.
Hydrate Drink water, but manage intake — bathroom breaks may be limited.
Review quick reference Spend 15–20 minutes reviewing the Final Checklist (key tables, domain weights).
Log in 15 minutes early Open the exam portal and launch PSI Secure Browser early. You will go through ID verification and room scanning before the exam starts.
Silence your phone Put your phone out of reach (not on the desk, not in your pocket). The proctor may ask you to show the area around your desk.

System Requirements

The KCSA exam is delivered via PSI Secure Browser. Ensure your system meets these minimum requirements:

Requirement Specification
Operating System Windows 10/11, macOS 10.15+, or Ubuntu 18.04+
Processor Dual-core 2.0 GHz or higher
RAM 4 GB minimum (8 GB recommended)
Screen Resolution 1280 × 800 minimum
Webcam Built-in or external, must be adjustable
Microphone Built-in or external, must be working
Internet Stable broadband (5 Mbps down, 3 Mbps up minimum)
Browser PSI Secure Browser (downloaded from exam portal)
Additional monitors Must be disconnected — single monitor only

Run the PSI system check at least 3 days before the exam. If it fails, you still have time to fix the issue or arrange an alternative computer.

Room Environment Requirements

The proctor will ask you to show your room and desk area using your webcam before the exam begins. Your environment must meet these requirements:

Requirement Details
Desk Clear — nothing except your computer, keyboard, mouse, and optionally a drink (closed container, no label)
Walls No whiteboards, posters, or sticky notes with text visible to the camera
Door Closed — no one may enter the room during the exam
Lighting Adequate — the proctor must be able to see your face clearly
Noise Minimal — no background conversations, music, or TV
Phone Out of reach — not on the desk, not in your pocket
Second monitor Disconnected — single screen only
Papers and books None on the desk or within arm’s reach
Earphones/headphones Not allowed — use built-in speakers if needed

If your environment does not meet requirements, the proctor may give you time to fix it or may terminate the session. Do not risk it — prepare the day before.

ID Requirements

You must present a valid government-issued photo ID that meets these criteria:

Criteria Details
Type Passport, national ID card, driver’s license, or military ID
Validity Must not be expired
Name match Name on the ID must match the name on your exam registration exactly
Photo Must have a clear, recognizable photo
Language If the ID is not in English, you may need a notarized English translation

If your legal name has changed since registration, update your registration OR bring supporting documentation. Mismatches can result in being denied entry to the exam.

Exam Interface Walkthrough

The KCSA exam interface in PSI Secure Browser includes these features:

Feature Description
Question display One question at a time with A/B/C/D options
Navigation panel Shows all question numbers — click to jump to any question
Flag for review Click the flag icon to mark questions you want to revisit
Progress indicator Shows how many questions you have answered vs. total
Timer Countdown timer visible at all times (top of screen)
Previous/Next Navigate between questions — you can go back to earlier questions
End exam Button to submit the exam when finished (confirm prompt before submission)

You can go back to previous questions. This is unlike some certification exams where you cannot return. Use this to your advantage — answer what you know, flag what you don’t, and come back later.

Time Management Strategy

You have 90 minutes for approximately 60 questions. That is 1 minute and 30 seconds per question.

The Three-Pass Strategy

Pass Duration Action
Pass 1: Quick sweep 50–60 minutes Answer every question you are confident about. Flag uncertain questions. Aim to answer 40–45 questions. Do not spend more than 90 seconds on any one question.
Pass 2: Flagged review 20–25 minutes Return to flagged questions. Use elimination: cross off wrong answers first. If you can eliminate 2 options, your odds go from 25% to 50%. Choose your best answer.
Pass 3: Final check 5–10 minutes Review any remaining flagged questions. Check for unanswered questions. Never leave a blank — there is no penalty for guessing.

Per-Question Timing

Question Type Recommended Time
Straightforward recall 30–60 seconds
Scenario-based 60–90 seconds
Complex elimination 90–120 seconds (flag if over 2 minutes)

If you are stuck on a question for more than 2 minutes, flag it and move on. The question you skip might be worth the same as the two easier questions ahead.

Mental Preparation

The Night Before

  • Sleep at least 7–8 hours. Exam performance correlates directly with sleep quality. No amount of last-minute cramming compensates for fatigue.
  • Do not study new material. If you do not know it by now, reading it at midnight will not help. Instead, review key tables or the Final Checklist for a quick confidence boost.
  • Visualize success. Mentally walk through the exam: logging in, reading questions calmly, using elimination, flagging and returning to questions. This reduces anxiety.

Exam Day Mindset

  • You are ready. If you have completed this tutorial, taken both mock exams, and reviewed your weak areas, you are prepared.
  • Read carefully. Most wrong answers come from misreading the question, not from lack of knowledge. Watch for “NOT”, “BEST”, “PRIMARY”, “MOST likely”.
  • Trust elimination. Even if you do not know the correct answer, eliminating 2 wrong options gives you a 50/50 chance.
  • Do not panic on hard questions. The exam has easy, medium, and hard questions. Getting a hard question wrong does not mean you are failing. Move on and collect the easier points.
  • Manage stress in real time. If you feel anxious during the exam, take 3 deep breaths (seriously). 10 seconds of calm breathing is worth more than 10 seconds of panicked reading.

What to Do If Technical Issues Occur

Issue Action
PSI Secure Browser crashes Relaunch the browser. Your progress is saved on the server. Log back in to resume.
Internet disconnection Reconnect as quickly as possible. If you are disconnected for a short period, your session may still be active. Contact PSI support if you cannot reconnect.
Webcam or microphone stops working Notify the proctor via the chat feature. They may give you time to resolve the issue.
Proctor does not respond Use the chat feature. If no response after 5 minutes, note the time and contact PSI support after the exam.
Fire alarm or emergency Notify the proctor immediately. Document the time. You may be eligible for a reschedule.
Someone enters the room Ask them to leave immediately. Notify the proctor proactively. Brief, accidental interruptions are usually tolerated if you are transparent.

PSI records the entire session (screen and webcam). Any suspicious behavior — even unintentional — may be flagged for review. When in doubt, communicate with the proctor proactively.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Learn from the mistakes of candidates who came before you:

Mistake Consequence Prevention
Not testing PSI Secure Browser Cannot launch exam on time Test 3 days before
Name mismatch between ID and registration Denied entry to exam Verify before exam day
Second monitor still connected Proctor asks you to disconnect, wastes exam time Disconnect the night before
Phone on desk or in pocket Proctor flags violation Put phone in another room
Studying until 2 AM the night before Fatigue, poor reading comprehension, careless mistakes Stop studying by 9 PM
Not reading the full question Missing “NOT” or “BEST” qualifiers Read every question twice
Spending 4+ minutes on one hard question Running out of time for easier questions Flag and move on after 2 minutes
Leaving questions blank Zero chance of getting credit Always guess — no penalty
Not reviewing flagged questions Missed opportunity to reconsider with fresh perspective Always do a second pass
Changing correct answers to wrong ones Losing points on questions you knew Only change if you have a clear reason
