Study Techniques for KCNA

The right study approach makes all the difference. Here are proven techniques to prepare effectively for the KCNA exam.

Study Timeline

Week Focus Topics
Week 1 K8s Fundamentals (46%) Architecture, control plane, worker nodes, API, networking
Week 2 K8s Resources + Container Orchestration (22%) Pods, Deployments, Services, containers, runtimes, networking
Week 3 Cloud Native Topics (32%) Architecture, microservices, observability, CI/CD, GitOps
Week 4 Review + Mock Exams Practice questions, weak areas, mock exams

2-Week Accelerated Plan

Week Focus
Week 1 All topics — one chapter per day
Week 2 Practice questions, mock exams, review weak areas

Effective Study Methods

1. Active Recall

Don’t just read — test yourself regularly.

  • After reading a topic, close the material and list what you remember
  • Use the practice questions at the end of each chapter
  • Create your own flashcards for key concepts

2. Spaced Repetition

Review material at increasing intervals:

Day 1: Learn topic
Day 2: Review
Day 4: Review
Day 7: Review
Day 14: Review

This is much more effective than cramming everything the night before.

3. Teach What You Learn

Explain concepts out loud as if teaching someone else. If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.

4. Practice Questions

The most effective study method for multiple-choice exams:

  1. Take practice questions
  2. For wrong answers: read the explanation and understand why each option is right or wrong
  3. For correct answers you guessed on: still read the explanation — make sure you know the reasoning
  4. Retake questions after a few days

High-Yield Topics

These topics appear frequently on the exam — master them first:

Kubernetes Fundamentals (46%)

Must-Know Topic What to Focus On
Control Plane Components etcd, API server, scheduler, controller manager — what each does
Worker Node Components kubelet, kube-proxy, container runtime — their roles
Pods Lifecycle, multi-container patterns, probes
Deployments Rolling updates, replicas, rollbacks
Services ClusterIP, NodePort, LoadBalancer — when to use each
ConfigMaps & Secrets How they work, security implications
Namespaces Isolation, resource quotas

Container Orchestration (22%)

Must-Know Topic What to Focus On
Containers vs VMs Key differences, when to use each
Container Runtimes containerd, CRI-O, CRI interface
Service Mesh What it is, sidecar pattern, Istio, Envoy
Container Security 4C’s model, image scanning, RBAC

Cloud Native Architecture (16%)

Must-Know Topic What to Focus On
Cloud Native Definition CNCF definition, five key technologies
Microservices Monolith vs microservices, communication patterns
CNCF Governance Maturity levels (Sandbox, Incubating, Graduated), TOC, TAGs
Autoscaling HPA, VPA, Cluster Autoscaler, KEDA

Flashcard Topics

Create flashcards for these frequently tested facts:

Question Answer
What stores cluster state in K8s? etcd
What metric types does Prometheus use? Counter, Gauge, Histogram, Summary
What are CNCF maturity levels? Sandbox → Incubating → Graduated
What is the default K8s deployment strategy? Rolling Update
What does HPA stand for? Horizontal Pod Autoscaler
What is GitOps’ source of truth? Git repository
What does a service mesh sidecar do? Intercepts all network traffic to/from the app container
What are the 4C’s of security? Cloud, Cluster, Container, Code
What is the KCNA passing score? 75%
What does CSI stand for? Container Storage Interface

Common Study Mistakes

Mistake Better Approach
Reading without testing yourself Use active recall and practice questions
Cramming the night before Use spaced repetition over weeks
Focusing on hands-on labs only KCNA is conceptual — focus on understanding concepts
Ignoring small domains (8%) Every question counts — don’t skip any domain entirely
Memorizing without understanding Understand the “why” — exam questions test understanding
