Custom Resource Definitions & Operators

Kubernetes is extensible by design. You can define new resource types beyond the built-in Pods, Services, and Deployments. This lets teams model their own objects — databases, certificates, message queues — as native Kubernetes resources.

This chapter covers Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs) and the Operator pattern from the Application Environment, Configuration & Security domain.

Topic What You’ll Learn
Kubernetes API API groups, versions, how kubectl discovers resources
Creating CRDs CRD structure, schema validation, printer columns
Custom Resources Creating, listing, managing instances of custom resources
Operator Pattern How operators work, real-world examples, finding CRDs
CRD vs ConfigMap When to use CRDs vs ConfigMaps
