Red Hat OpenShift — Enterprise Kubernetes Platform
Red Hat OpenShift Tutorial
Welcome to the Red Hat OpenShift tutorial track. This series covers the enterprise Kubernetes platform from Red Hat, including OpenShift-specific concepts, developer workflows, and operational best practices.
What is OpenShift?
Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) is an enterprise Kubernetes distribution that adds developer and operational tools on top of Kubernetes. It provides a complete platform for building, deploying, and managing containerized applications with built-in CI/CD, monitoring, and security.
What You’ll Learn
| Area | Topics |
|---|---|
| Platform Setup | OpenShift installation methods (IPI, UPI), CodeReady Containers (CRC) for local dev |
| Core Concepts | Projects (namespaces), Routes, BuildConfigs, DeploymentConfigs, ImageStreams |
| Developer Workflow | Source-to-Image (S2I), OpenShift CLI (oc), web console, Developer perspective |
| Networking | OpenShift SDN, OVN-Kubernetes, Routes vs Ingress, HAProxy router |
| Storage | OpenShift Data Foundation (ODF), CSI drivers, dynamic provisioning |
| Security | Security Context Constraints (SCCs), OAuth, LDAP/AD integration |
| Operators | Operator Lifecycle Manager (OLM), OperatorHub, building custom Operators |
| CI/CD | OpenShift Pipelines (Tekton), OpenShift GitOps (ArgoCD) |
| Monitoring | Built-in Prometheus and Grafana, alerting, user workload monitoring |
| Service Mesh | OpenShift Service Mesh (Istio-based), Kiali, Jaeger |
OpenShift Key Features
- Routes — Built-in ingress with TLS termination, no external Ingress controller needed
- Source-to-Image (S2I) — Build container images directly from source code
- OperatorHub — Marketplace of pre-built Operators for databases, middleware, and more
- Security Context Constraints — Fine-grained security policies (stricter than Pod Security Standards)
- Web Console — Feature-rich UI with Developer and Administrator perspectives
- OpenShift Pipelines — Kubernetes-native CI/CD based on Tekton

Before starting this track, you should have:
- Completed the Kubernetes Foundation Tutorial or equivalent experience
- CodeReady Containers (CRC) for local development, or access to an OpenShift cluster
- A Red Hat account (free developer account available)
- Familiarity with enterprise deployment patterns
