Docker Tutorial — Docker Ecosystem Overview

1 minute read

Docker is not a single tool — it’s an ecosystem of components that work together to build, ship, and run containers. Understanding the ecosystem helps you know which tool to use for each task.

Core Docker Components

Docker Engine

The heart of Docker. A client-server application with three parts:

  • Docker Daemon (dockerd) — background service that manages containers
  • Docker CLI (docker) — command-line tool you type commands into
  • REST API — how the CLI talks to the daemon

Docker Desktop

A GUI application for macOS and Windows that bundles:

  • Docker Engine (running in a lightweight Linux VM)
  • Docker CLI
  • Docker Compose
  • Kubernetes (single-node cluster)
  • Docker Scout (image scanning)

Docker Hub

The default public registry for container images. Think of it as GitHub, but for Docker images.

  • Official images (maintained by Docker): nginx, postgres, node, python
  • Verified publisher images (from companies): bitnami/redis, grafana/grafana
  • Community images (from anyone): millions of user-submitted images

Docker Compose

A tool for defining and running multi-container applications using a YAML file.

# compose.yml — run a web app + database with one command
services:
  web:
    image: myapp:1.0
    ports:
      - "8080:80"
  db:
    image: postgres:16
    environment:
      POSTGRES_PASSWORD: secret

BuildKit

Docker’s next-generation image builder. Faster, more efficient, and supports advanced features like build secrets, SSH forwarding, and parallel build stages.

Third-Party Ecosystem

Tool What It Does
Kubernetes Container orchestration at scale (scheduling, scaling, networking)
Podman Docker-compatible runtime (rootless, daemonless)
containerd Low-level container runtime (used by Docker and Kubernetes)
Buildah Build OCI images without Docker daemon
Skopeo Copy images between registries without pulling
Trivy Security scanner for container images
Helm Package manager for Kubernetes (uses container images)

Docker Hub Public image registry
Docker Compose Multi-container apps from YAML
BuildKit Next-gen image builder
containerd Low-level container runtime

Quick Reference

Docker Ecosystem:
  CLI (docker) → sends commands
Daemon (dockerd) → manages containers, images, networks, volumes
  containerd → low-level runtime management
runc → creates containers using Linux kernel features
Docker Hub → public image registry
  Compose → multi-container YAML definitions
BuildKit → fast, secure image builds
