Docker Compose — When to Use Compose

3 minute read

Docker Compose is powerful, but it’s not the right tool for every situation. This page helps you decide when Compose is the perfect fit and when you should look at other tools.

When to Use Docker Compose

1. Local Development

This is Compose’s sweet spot. You need a database, a cache, a message queue, and your app — all running locally.

# Local dev stack in one file
services:
  app:
    build: .
    ports:
      - "3000:3000"
    volumes:
      - .:/app
    depends_on:
      - db
      - redis

  db:
    image: postgres:16
    environment:
      POSTGRES_PASSWORD: devpass

  redis:
    image: redis:7-alpine
docker compose up -d
# Your entire dev environment is ready

2. Testing and CI/CD

Spin up a complete test environment, run tests, tear it down:

# In your CI pipeline
docker compose up -d
docker compose exec app npm test
docker compose down -v

3. Small Deployments

For small teams or simple production deployments (1-5 services on a single server), Compose works well:

# Deploy on a VPS
ssh myserver
cd /opt/myapp
docker compose pull
docker compose up -d

4. Demos and Prototypes

Share your entire stack with anyone:

git clone https://github.com/yourorg/project.git
cd project
docker compose up -d
# Everything works — database, API, frontend

5. Documentation and Reproducibility

Your compose.yml serves as living documentation of your infrastructure:

┌────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ compose.yml = Infrastructure Docs │
│ │
│ • What services exist │
│ • How they connect │
│ • What ports they use │
│ • What env vars they need │
│ • What data they persist │
│ • What order they start in │
└────────────────────────────────────────┘

When NOT to Use Docker Compose

1. Large-Scale Production (10+ Services)

When you need:

  • Auto-scaling across multiple servers
  • Rolling deployments with zero downtime
  • Service mesh and advanced load balancing
  • Self-healing (automatic restart on different nodes)

Use instead: Kubernetes, Docker Swarm, or AWS ECS

2. Multi-Host Deployments

Compose runs on a single Docker host. If you need containers on multiple servers:

Use instead: Kubernetes, Docker Swarm, Nomad

3. Complex Orchestration

If you need:

  • Canary deployments
  • Blue/green deployments
  • Automatic horizontal scaling based on metrics
  • Pod affinity/anti-affinity rules

Use instead: Kubernetes

Compose vs Other Tools

Tool Best For Compose Alternative?
Docker Compose Local dev, small deployments —
Kubernetes Large-scale production Yes — much more complex
Docker Swarm Simple multi-host orchestration Partial — uses compose files
Podman Compose Rootless containers Drop-in Compose replacement
AWS ECS AWS-native deployments Yes — cloud managed
Nomad Multi-cloud orchestration Yes — HashiCorp ecosystem
