Docker Compose — Compose Ecosystem

2 minute read

Docker Compose doesn’t exist in isolation. It’s part of a rich ecosystem of tools, integrations, and community resources. This page maps out the Compose landscape.

Core Components

Docker Compose CLI Plugin

Compose V2 is a plugin for the Docker CLI, not a standalone binary:

# The plugin lives here
ls ~/.docker/cli-plugins/docker-compose

# Docker loads it automatically
docker compose version

Compose File Specification

The Compose file format is an open specification maintained by Docker:

The spec defines every valid key and value in a compose file.

Tool What It Does Relationship to Compose
Kompose Converts compose files to Kubernetes manifests Migration path from Compose → K8s
Testcontainers Programmatic container management for tests Compose-like functionality in code (Java, Go, Python)
Podman Compose Runs compose files with Podman instead of Docker Drop-in replacement, rootless containers
Docker Swarm Multi-host container orchestration Uses docker stack deploy with compose files
Dockge Web UI for managing Compose stacks Visual editor for compose.yml
Portainer Docker management web interface Can deploy Compose stacks via UI
Lazydocker Terminal UI for Docker Shows Compose services in a TUI

IDE Integrations

Most modern editors have excellent Compose support:

IDE/Editor Extension Features
VS Code Docker extension Syntax highlighting, IntelliSense, deploy
JetBrains Built-in Docker plugin Run/debug Compose services
Vim/Neovim docker-compose.vim Syntax highlighting

In VS Code, the Docker extension provides:

  • YAML auto-completion for compose.yml
  • Right-click → “Compose Up” on any compose file
  • Container management in the sidebar

The Compose Specification

The Compose Specification is the formal document that defines the compose file format. Key top-level elements:

Element Purpose Required
services Container definitions ✅ Yes
networks Custom networks Optional
volumes Named volumes Optional
configs Configuration files Optional
secrets Sensitive data Optional

The Awesome Compose repository is particularly useful — it contains dozens of example compose files for common application stacks.
